How much power can you get from solar roofing panels? This will depend on the efficiency of the panel’s solar photovoltaic (PV) cells in converting solar light energy into electrical energy.

The efficiency of a panel is defined by a complicated formula that assumes optimal sun exposure. An 8% efficient panel will require twice the area of a 16% efficient panel to produce the same output.

Although, we often hear of marvelous advances in solar cell technology in the laboratory, the commercial solar cells available today represent the current state of the art.

Commercial solar roof panels average 14% efficiency and produce about 14.4-w/sq ft (155 w/sq m). Standard solar roof panel sizes are about 13.5 sq ft., and each panel produces about 200 watts. Wholesale prices for these panels average about $1 per watt.

Is That What You Get?

That is a lot of power if you can utilize it cost effectively. Actual panel power output will depend on your homes geographical location, roof orientation and the chosen solar power system. Is your goal a completely off-grid system that fulfills all your electrical energy needs, or is your goal a grid-tie system to decrease energy bills?

The amount of yearly sunlight available across the continental U.S. averages about 5 hours. The northeast sees only 4.2 hours of full sun, but the southwest enjoys 5.5 hours. Assuming an average of 5 hours of sunlight, a 200-watt panel would produce 1 Kwh/day or 365 Kwh/year. Panels sell for about sunlight.

Solar System Type

For an off-grid system, a Derate Factor must be included that adjusts for the efficiency of an off-grid solar power system in transferring panel output to your home outlet. A common value used is 0.77. Therefore, a 200-watt panel will ultimately produce only 154 watts – 281 Kwh/year.

In a grid-tied solar power system simpler set-up, power goes straight to your utility meter. The power generated from your solar panels goes into the energy grid and offsets the cost of power you use during sunless hours. With this direct connection, a grid-tied system does not suffer from this loss.


Assuming your home uses the U.S. average of 11000 Kwh/year, an off-grid system would require 40 panels spread over 540 sq ft of optimally oriented roof space. Cost for panels would be about $7800. With an off-grid system, you would need inverters to convert the power to AC and batteries for storage. A complete off-grid system could easily cost $20,000.

A grid-tie system would only require 30 panels. With an inverter to connect to the grid, a grid-tie system would cost about $12,000 and – in theory – totally offset your energy bill. However, a grid-tie system can be scaled down to only offset a portion of utility costs.

According to the US Energy Information Agency, the current average price of electricity is about 11.3 cents per Kwh resulting in a monthly bill of $103.67 or $1,244.04/yr. However, the variation in cost of electricity by location is greater than for the hours of sunlight and may be a more important variable.

The necessity for government incentives probably shows that solar energy simply has not reached the ROIs making them practical for the majority of homeowners.

How Much Do Solar Home Costs? The Planning, Calculation, Finance, And Future Savings Summarised 2022

A very confusing item right now is how to research and review the costs of solar power in your home and what are the solar power pros and cons.

I will break the costs of solar power into two areas. I will cover the actual costs including the federal and government solar power rebates and then I will cover the trends for the costs of solar power in a second post.

The Cost Of Solar Power Summary

There are essentially three areas you need to consider when going through your evaluation.

  • Upfront Costs – Currently the cost of the solar power panels and equipment can be pretty pricey. I will cover those details below.
  • Government Credits – Depending on your state, these are life savers and the government realizes that without these credits, it would be impossible for the average family to afford.
  • How long you will be in your house – If you plan on moving or could move in the next couple of years, the solar power costs will not be a wise investment. More on that below.

The Cost Of Solar Power Calculation

I used the Sunpower Solar Power Cost Calculator to do my analysis. I walked through it and found it very objective and fair. Avoid calculators that don’t take into account the cost of money or loans.

Key Variables – I made these up and they assumed I live in California because the credit is best there. I also assumed a 2000 sq ft home with all average living conditions.

You can see that the initial cost of the equipment is 38,000 dollars. Don’t pass out quite yet! The government credits and rebates bring that down to $21,337.00! You can see that if you live in a state that does not yet cover these costs as aggressively as California does, you have some catching up to do on your ROI.

Assuming you don’t have $21,000 dollars laying around, you have to then assume you will want to take out a loan. One difficulty in this is that loans aren’t easy to come by. Keep in mind, this is money you will save over time, so the loan isn’t the same as buying a car or boat.

The Cost Of Solar Power – Financing

So how does this look? Well, you can see from the table (click to zoom in) that your loan is 142.00 dollars, so it’s a matter of how quickly you save on your bills each month. Bottom line: The more your bill is over 142 dollars in this example, the faster you will return your money!

There are two parts to this savings as you can see. There is a very quick initial return on your energy bills of 1,600 dollars in the first year alone So the first 5 years will be very good as that is how long some people can estimate they will live in their home. Secondly, if you are in that house for over 18-25 years, you will essentially fall off the grid with a positive cash flow of roughly $10,000.00.

The Cost Of Solar Power Summary

While these take in prime conditions, living in sunny California with an aggressive rebate, they do have some long-term advantages. Sunpower estimated that this would be a 10.3% ROI. While that initial cost would scare off some, that type of ROI would lure in any business, so it should be the same mindset for the average homeowner.

I will cover the trend in the industry in another blog, but as solar power equipment is expected to fall and utility prices are expected to rise, this gap should be even better over time.

And if you are doing this for environmental reasons, then you should know that this investment was the equivalent of reducing 8,300 miles of driving in the first year!

Change Of Perspective Required

When I review how people | companies have been analyzing the investment into solar power, they do it in such a complicating way that I am going to re-emphasize and try to simplify the justification into the investment. Please comment if you see this helped or confused the issue. People tend to ask “How much do solar panels cost”, How much does solar power cost; What is the cost of solar energy; or how much does a solar panel cost.

I believe this is the wrong way of looking at it. The true way to answer the question of whether solar power is a good investment for you is to ask “Will I see a profit in my solar power investment over a time period that I am comfortable with.” If you treat it like a business proposal, it makes much more sense.

Here are my assumptions:

  • Your electricity cost per year: $1,200.00
  • Electrical Costs / yr Increase: 3%
  • Location: San Jose, California
  • Money: Home equity Loan: 20 Year Loan, 7%, 20% down payment.

Obviously if I own a solar him in San Jose, California as in my example, it is a prime location and presents an optimum scenario. The first price is the cost of the solar energy system. The second are the solar tax credits for both the state and federal solar programs. As you can see, what you are left with after a $24,000 dollar system and tax rebates is a solar panel and solar energy system of $14,000. So what next? Well look at your energy bill savings.

You are saving approximately $950.00 per year on the system. So at the very very rough level, it will take you 14 years to recoup this investment. In more specific terms, because you took out a loan, you will save roughly 25 dollars per month in electricity during the life of the loan. It also has a great resell in case you are worried about moving before you recoup your savings.

When people consider purchasing solar panels for their homes, they often focus on saving money on their energy costs, what the ROI (return on investment) is for the system, what the cash flow scenario will look like for selling their SRECs, etc. All of these are important things to consider, but there is more to solar energy than just saving money or even improving your financial position.

The concept I’m alluding to is something that I see as a fundamental element of wealth generation: creating instead of consumingcontrolling resources instead of just consuming them.

When you go solar, you are creating something that is equally as valuable as money. Energy is an incredibly precious resource, even more than the money I would argue. Solar energy is a game-changer; you are creating energy, and if you create more than you consume, you can sell that excess at a profit.

Why Many Solar Clients Do Not Care About Saving Money?

When I first got involved in the solar industry, it was to build a successful business offering something that helped people save money on their energy bills and reduce their carbon emissions.

But over the years, as we grew the company, I began to better understand our clients, myself, and the deeper values of investing in solar.

There is a lot of emphasis place on saving money in the solar industry, but the more systems we installed, the more I gained a better understanding and deeper appreciation for what solar actually does for you as an investment.

Everyone Wants To Save Money, RIGHT?


If all you’re looking to do is SAVE MONEY with solar, OWNING a solar electric system probably is not right for you. Here’s why…

There are lots of free, low cost ways to save more money. Something as simple as cancelling your premium cable T.V. package might save you $100 a month.

In fact, there are plenty of fast, easy, no-money down leasing options available for solar these days. So, why would you ever invest $15,000-$25,000+ or more just to save money on electricity?

Investing Money Is Very Different From Saving Money

Solar is a sophisticated investment for people who understand and can benefit from multiple areas, not just saving money.

The reality is, for many of my clients, saving money is pretty far down on the priority list. This may sound strange, but here are the benefits we focus on…

  • Long-Term Cash Flow

With solar, you can practically guarantee what electricity will cost over the lifetime of the system, which by the way happens to be 25-30 years.

This is incredibly valuable for someone who thinks in terms of long-term cash flow. This is not so beneficial to some who does not have a long-term plan.

Many people have a hard time sticking to a plan 1-2 years out, let alone 10, 15 or 20 years.

  • Investment of Surplus Cash

When your basic needs are met and your household or business is accumulating cash, you have to invest it somewhere.

Saving money becomes less important, and INVESTING becomes the primary focus.

While holding some cash is smart, holding too much cash for too long is simply not wise due to the fact that it produces a negative return annually.

With each day that passes, your cash is losing value. You have to invest it as quickly as possible because it is losing purchasing power. The stock market, real estate, gold, etc…are all options.

This is where solar comes in…

Solar yields a high return on invested cash, not to mention it is relatively passive. Once it is installed, it will require very little time and work to keep producing a consistent, stable return.

However, if you are not in the position of having too much cash, than you won’t even be able to see this benefit.

  • Increased Net Worth

Just like with cash flow, many people don’t process financial decisions as they relate to their overall net worth. Installing solar panels on your home or business creates an asset that adds to your net worth.

And just like the “too much cash” problem, if you don’t think in terms of net worth, this benefit will be of little value.

  • Tax Advantages

Have you ever written a BIG check to the IRS? If you have, then you know how painful this can be.

There are numerous ways investing in solar can help reduce your tax liability. But if you have never written a big check to the IRS, you might not fully internalize the value of this benefit.

If all of your income is “W2 type” income, there is a detachment from the taxes you pay. You are still paying the taxes, but since you don’t physically write checks to the IRS every quarter, it feels different.

  • Wealth Control

Strip away all the financial benefits of an investment and what are you left with?

  • With cash, stocks, and mutual funds, you are left with nothing but a piece of paper or—more accurately these days—digits on a computer screen.
  • With real estate, you are left with physical structure or place to provide shelter.
  • With gold, you are left with a precious metal that has trading value.
  • With solar panels, you are left with something that produces energy that can be used or sold.

When Money Is Not The First, Most Pressing Priority For You And Your Family, Other Things Start To Become More Important.

With many of my personal clients, independently producing electricity for their family or business is much more of a priority than the financial benefits of solar.

But if money is your first, most pressing priority, you might not even see this benefit. Your more immediate needs will take precedence.

There many reasons why people become INTERESTED in solar. But, being interested in solar and actually making the decision to invest are two different things.

If you are not able to see or take advantage of the deeper benefits solar has to offer, you are probably going to have a difficult time justifying the final investment decision.

Take the time to fully understand your situation and what you are hoping to accomplish by investing in solar panels for your home or business.

Many of us are going solar these days and putting nice new solar panels on our homes or hiring a solar power company to get us up and running.

The other day I came across a comment that said solar panels require more energy to build and maintain than they put out.
